Project Background

Agar Scientific specialises in consumables and equipment used in Biological Science and Material Science related fields. One of the most advanced and essential tools in those fields is Cryogenic Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM), which allows the understanding of biological mechanisms and structures at near-atomic level. A crucial aspect of this technique is to have suitable tools to safely keep the Cryo-EM specimen grids under cryogenic temperatures.

Our Brief

the challenge is that many materials, ductile at room temperature, abruptly lose their ductility and become brittle at low temperatures. The Cryo-EM applications require materials that can withstand extreme cold down to -196 °C. By carefully choosing high crack resistance materials, we worked with the customer and developed a complete set of tools for Cryo-EM storage and transport under cryogenic conditions.

The Product

We developed a number of products which include:

Cryo Grid-Box are used for transferring, storing and manipulating vitrified cryo TEM specimens. Thanks for the flexible tooling design, a wide range of optional grid wells are available for the Cryo-EM specimens made with the popular cryo devices on the market, such as FEI Vitrobot, Gatan 626 or Gatan CT3500 cryotransfer systems. Two types of antistatic rotatable lids available for general tweezer and vacuum probe tools.

Cryo Puck with 12 numbered Grid-Box wells, up to 24 boxes capacity and a lockable see-through lid for easy retrieving. Each puck has a unique serial number to keep track of every sample. Customised logo and anodising colour are available.

Cryo Shipping Cane holds up to 7 Pucks, with one-click easy Puck retrieving and locking mechanism. Swappable hook system to fit various Cryo storage Dewars or shipping containers. Customised logo, serial number and anodising colour are available.
